Over time, the animation field has evolved considerably. It has enabled animators to produce and make their own money by creating animated little movies, films, or digital drawings and posting them on social media. Considering animation is such a vast field, animators have also been able to engage with commercials, cartoon shows/movies, and video games, including the fact Speak briefly on animation’s economic aspect. Animation has affected the economy and produced a good amount of money. They also enabled animators to generate and generate their own income by producing and publishing animated videos or digital graphics on YouTube, Instagram, etc. Due to its diversity, animators are able to work in publicity, cartoon programs, films as well as video games to increase employment. Millions of viewers can reach an animated video with attractive material in a single day. In addition to the financial benefits such a movie would bring, this also does provide animators with several career openings. ACR Takes a Look, has pointed out the percentage of self-employment and employment levels is expected to increase in future years. ” Employment for this group is expected to grow 8% from 2016-2026. This is about as fast as average for all occupations. Projected employment growth for animators and multimedia artists will be the result of increased demand for animation and more realistic visual effects in video games, movies, and television.” (What Does an Animator Do? Burton informs us with presented statistical evidence to demonstrate how the field of animations would spread over time and how it is progressing to become more of a marvelous effect on animation. Furthermore, Burton has claimed that because self-employed animators have the flexibility to produce anything they want, they have been able to provide them with an environment where they enjoy working and most likely work alongside big media, making a considerable amount of money. And being able to have have their own time to do their own projects. “The Bureau also notes that around 57% of animators were self-employed in 2012. This is the most current figure for self-employed animators. These professionals often work from home, contracting with Film, animation, video game production studios, cartoon networks, advertising agencies, web design firms, graphic design firms, and mobile technology companies. Some self-employed animators may work in office settings.” (Burton) Alongside employment, another way animations have effectively impacted the economy, you guessed, animated films! One great example was back in 2020, there was an anime film called Demon Slayer, which exceeded the producers’ expectations on the Film. New York Times Article, What Pandemic? Japanese Film Draws a Record Flood of Moviegoers, Ben Dooley, “The Film outperformed all expectations, more than doubling the country’s record for the largest opening weekend, with over 3.4 million people shelling out nearly $44 million on tickets. In what may be a first for Japan, the movie had the biggest opening in the world last weekend — more than all other countries combined — despite having debuted only domestically” (What Pandemic? Japanese Film Draws a Record Flood of Moviegoers, New York Times, Dooley). Dooley has pointed out that despite pandemic and theatrical limitations, it was an event that several fans liked to experience. It increased to the point that it surpassed numerous records, including placing tenth in Japan regarding box office revenue. That there have been countless times where an animated film has broken records. It also has had a societal influence on the way we communicate with the world, in which ways we cannot convey our thoughts via words but rather through graphics.
Animation has had a cultural effect on the way we communicate with the audience and, in a way, affects us personally as well. When we can also not explain ourselves verbally, animators can create graphics representing the feelings and concepts we want to convey. Primarily when it comes to representing minority groups that do not often feel like they are seen. In an Entertainment Article, Nick Romano, interviewing the creator of Steven Universe, reveals to us how children’s shows like Steven Universe have helped viewers feel like they are seen and heard; moreover, he interviewed Rebecca Sugar, the show’s creator. Especially to reach out to young LGBTQ viewers that will feel represented on screen with cartoon characters. Stating,” “We need to let children know that they belong in this world,” she says. “You cannot wait to tell them that until after they grow up or the damage will be done. You have to tell them while they’re still children that they deserve love and that they deserve support, and that people will be excited to hear their story. When you do not show any children stories about LGBTQIA characters, and then they grow up, they’re not going to tell their own stories because they’re going to think they’re inappropriate. They’re going to have an excellent reason to think that because they’ve been told that through their entire childhood.” (Romano) Furthermore, Charity Cohen, ‘Stories where we exist’: Pixar’s ‘Soul’ sparks conversation on Black representation, explains how an animation movie like Soul has brought positive black representation instead of the stereotypical black model shown on screen. “While the film gave lessons about the meaning and treasures of life, it also prompted polarizing dialogue about Black representation in the film and entertainment industry among viewers and critics. “It was interesting, and I like the fact that it was a Black person and had very Black things in it because you don’t see that very often in the media in general, but especially not from Disney,” Alexis Jamison, a junior studying advertising and public relations, said. While the film gave lessons about the meaning and treasures of life, it also prompted polarizing dialogue about Black representation in the film and entertainment industry among viewers and critics .“It was interesting, and I like the fact that it was a Black person and had very Black things in it because you don’t see that very often in media in general, but especially not from Disney,” Alexis Jamison, a junior studying advertising and public relations, said.” (Cohen) Cohan interviews Alexis as she discusses further by depth the significance of repressiveness and breaking stereotypes in animated movies. In films like these and so many more, it illustrates how much our environment and representation can significantly influence and communicate our views to the screen. The ability to perceive representation through animation made other spectators and even animators feel visible.
Overall the field of animation has changed significantly throughout time. The animations companies has made it possible to generate animated little videos, flicks or digital drawings, and upload them on social media, producing and making their own money. Given the wide range of animation, animators were also able to connect with advertisements, cartoon/shows and video games, including the fact that an animated picture has broken records in countless instances. It has also had a social impact on our method of communicating with the world, which means that we do not transmit our thoughts through words, but rather images.
